Publication Process
Andean Journal of Engineering Sciences follows a rigorous and transparent editorial process from manuscript submission to online publication. The diagram below illustrates the steps authors must follow to prepare and submit their manuscript through the OJS system. The sections below describe each stage of the editorial process following submission.
Stage 1 — Desk Review
Upon receipt of the manuscript, the Editor-in-Chief conducts an initial assessment to determine whether the submission meets the journal's basic requirements. This assessment considers the following criteria: correspondence with the thematic scope of AJES, use of the official format and template, manuscript length within the established range for the article type, accepted language (Spanish or English), declared originality and absence of simultaneous submission, and compliance with the ethical principles of scientific publication.
Manuscripts that do not pass this assessment will be returned to the corresponding author with an explanation of the reasons. Authors may revise and resubmit their work once the indicated observations have been addressed.
Estimated time: 5 to 7 business days.
Stage 2 — Assignment to Editor
Manuscripts that pass the desk review are assigned by the Editor-in-Chief to the appropriate Editor based on the thematic area of the work. The Editor assumes responsibility for managing the manuscript from this point, identifying and contacting the most suitable external reviewers for the evaluation.
Estimated time: 2 to 3 business days.
Stage 3 — Peer Review
The manuscript is sent to at least two external reviewers with expertise in the relevant thematic area, following a double-blind process: the authors do not know the identity of the reviewers, and the reviewers do not know the identity of the authors. Reviewers assess the originality, methodological rigor, scientific relevance, and clarity of the work. Upon completing their evaluation, each reviewer issues one of the following recommendations:
- Accept without changes: the manuscript is accepted in its current form.
- Minor revisions: limited corrections are required, with no need for a new peer review round.
- Major revisions: substantial modifications are required, which will be evaluated again by the reviewers.
- Reject: the manuscript does not meet the journal's standards.
Estimated time: 4 to 6 weeks.
Stage 4 — Editorial Decision and Response Letter
The Editor evaluates the reviewer reports and issues a recommendation to the Editor-in-Chief, who makes the final editorial decision. The corresponding author is notified by email with the decision and, where applicable, with the detailed reviewer comments.
If revisions are required, the author must prepare a point-by-point response letter addressing each reviewer comment clearly and in detail, indicating the changes made to the manuscript or providing a scientific argument for any comment that was not incorporated. Authors are provided with a template and an example response letter for reference:
Estimated time: 3 to 5 business days after receiving reviewer reports.
Stage 5 — Revision and Corrections
The author has a set period to submit the revised manuscript along with the reviewer response letter. If the changes made are substantial, the Editor may send the revised manuscript to the original reviewers for a second evaluation round. In this case, the author must again prepare a detailed response letter addressing the comments from this second evaluation, following the same format and level of detail as the initial response.
If the changes are minor and do not require a new peer review, the Editor will directly verify that the corrections are satisfactory before issuing a final recommendation.
Time allocated to the author: 2 to 3 weeks depending on the type of revision required.
Stage 6 — Acceptance and APC
Once the manuscript is accepted, the corresponding author receives the formal acceptance notification together with instructions for payment of the article processing charge (APC). Publication is completed upon confirmation of payment or approval of the applicable waiver. During the inaugural period (Vol. 1, No. 1 and Vol. 2, No. 1), the APC is USD 0 for all accepted articles.
Stage 7 — Production and Publication
The editorial team carries out copyediting, final layout, and assignment of the permanent digital identifier DOI through CrossRef. The article is published online in PDF format with complete metadata: title, authors, affiliations, keywords, abstract, DOI, and CC BY 4.0 license. The corresponding author receives the publication link and the article DOI by email.
Estimated time: 2 to 3 weeks after payment or waiver confirmation.
