Abstract
Structured computer-aided design (CAD) file management is essential for preserving parametric-reference integrity, maintaining correspondence among models, drawings, and the Bill of Materials (BOM), and supporting the design-to-manufacturing transition. This paper proposes a three-digit hierarchical numerical coding methodology for SOLIDWORKS projects, articulated with the Product Breakdown Structure (PBS), Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), and technical-documentation principles. The methodology was verified using the final file tree of a corn-shelling machine modeled in SOLIDWORKS 2022. The inventory contains one master assembly, six X00 modules, eighteen XY0 subassemblies, and fifty-nine XYZ part files. The audit confirmed the uniqueness of numerical identifiers and the consistency of parent-child relationships in the final inventory. The method also distinguishes a file from its multiple instances within an assembly, preventing occurrence counts from being interpreted as code duplication. The proposal is presented as a pedagogical and organizational tool; its benefits do not constitute evidence of superiority over other document-management approaches
